Public Art Tour
Nine works across the downtown district, plus one very well-chosen wall that does not have any art on it yet.
9 stopsAbout 45 minutes
Notcross has commissioned public art since 1998. The programme was, for most of that period, better at selecting sites than at filling them.
That has changed, though one stop on this route remains a site rather than a work. It is included deliberately.
The Route
Stop 1: Watershed Mural
Skin Alley
Ninety feet of painted brick tracing the course of the Chattahoochee, completed in 2019 by a regional artist collective. Still the largest work in the city.
Stop 2: Air Line Belle
Depot Green
A weathering-steel sculpture of a locomotive profile, cut at three-quarter scale and set into the lawn at the angle of the original alignment. Installed 2021.
Stop 3: Crossing Bells
Park Drive crossing
A sound installation commissioned in 2026, after the Quiet Zone took effect and the horns stopped.
It sounds a recorded horn once each day, at 5:14 in the afternoon, at a volume the Commission describes as considerate. Several residents asked for it. Several others did not.
Stop 4: The Rendering
City Hall forecourt, College Street
A bronze cast of a rolled set of architectural drawings, tied with a ribbon, resting on a plinth. Commissioned in 2025 during the first year of the Reversal.
The Commission's brief asked for a work that acknowledged the previous four decades without mocking the people who lived through them. It is the most photographed work in the city.
Stop 5: The Ledger
History Museum forecourt, Thrasher Street
A bronze relief of the original depot ledger, opened to the page recording the first freight received in 1891. The entries are legible.
Stop 6: Skin Alley Walls
Skin Alley between Buchanan Street and Park Drive
Three rotating mural walls, repainted annually by artists selected through an open call. The current cycle went up in March.
Stop 7: Bench Series
S Peachtree Street
Six artist-made benches along the length of the main street, each by a different maker, installed 2023. They are benches first and works second, which was the commission.
Stop 8: Water Table
Skin Alley Pocket Park
A cast-concrete table with a shallow recirculating channel cut through its length, installed with the pocket park in 2022. Children treat it as a toy, which the artist intended.
Stop 9: The Thrasher Street Wall
North wall of the Thrasher Street parking deck
Selected in 2026 as the preferred site for the city's next major work, following an eight-month evaluation of six candidate walls against visibility, pedestrian exposure, structural suitability, lighting and maintenance access.
The evaluation was thorough and the site is the right one. The wall is painted in the City's standard exterior neutral. A call for artists is in preparation.
