Parks Department Builds Splash Pad Depicted in 2018 Rendering

The Thrasher Commons Splash Pad opened to the public on Saturday, drawing an estimated 400 visitors on its first afternoon.
The facility includes eleven interactive water features, a shaded seating area for caregivers, a bottle-filling drinking fountain, and a decorative paving pattern inspired by the Chattahoochee watershed. It matches, feature for feature, the conceptual rendering produced in 2018 at a cost of $38,000.
That rendering was displayed at the Thrasher Commons pavilion each summer from 2018 through 2024, and in the Parks & Recreation administrative office in the off-season, where it hung beside the 2016 rendering of the proposed dog park.
"People would stand in front of it and picture their kids out there," the Parks Director said. "That is what a rendering is supposed to do. It is not, it turns out, all a rendering is supposed to do."
Construction was funded through a combination of SPLOST proceeds and a state recreation grant, and completed in seven months.
The dog park rendering remains on display. Design work is scheduled to begin in the fall.
